We Moved!!!

Dear Friends,

Something Green has recently packed up and moved our way across town (virtually speaking, of course!). You can now find all the fun, eco-chic party-planning tips that you are used to finding here at www.somethinggreenevents.blogspot.com. But have no fear: all of our old posts are archived at the new address!

We’ve been so excited lately as our readership has been growing. We now have regular readers all over the U.S., from Brooklyn to LA, and lots of great places in between, and are beginning to see some international readers sneaking in to take a second look at our posts. Please continue to help spread the word! Good karma never hurt anyone (not that we know of at least!).

Thanks for all of your support.

xoxo

Vintage Glamour

Vendor: Timeless Vixen

When it comes to the most important element of any fabulous party, for me, it always comes down to one thing: the perfect outfit. Whether you are attending/hosting a wedding, a cocktail party or a luncheon, special occasions, in my opinion, nearly always call for a special party dress (or at the very least, a special accessory). Timeless Vixen boasts an amazing assortment of vintage dresses, many of which have a fun, flirty 1950’s feel and yet manage to come across as modern at the same time. Like most vintage clothing retailers, their prices vary, according to each piece. For those with thin wallets, browse their adorable and affordable day dresses. For those looking to splurge, view their gorgeous evening and wedding dresses. Either way, you are bound to end up with something completely unique, completely beautiful and completely green.

Eco Etsy Finds

From time to time, I like to browse both Etsy and Eco Etsy to see what sorts of fun, new products I’ll stumble across. There have been lots lately, so I thought I’d put together an abbreviated list of some of my most recent finds/vendors.

Recycled Sail Purses and Luggage Tags

Throughout college, I frequently summered in Portland, Maine. There was excellent shopping throughout the city, but I’ve always remembered this one little shop that turned used sails into adorable handbags. These purses and luggage tags instantly made me nostalgic for a summer spent with rocky beaches, lobster rolls and good friends.

Vendor: Reiter8

Upcycled Bottle Cap Magnets

Over the weekend, I was (perhaps to my own unfortunate embarrassment) skimming through the pages of one of my Martha craft books when I found a fun project: turning used bottle caps into adorable magnets and “mini” frames. You can thus imagine my excitement when I discovered these Valentine’s Day-themed versions this afternoon.

Vendor: Beans Things

Dictionary Gift Tags

As a writer, I always adore finding any sort of decor that incorporates reading and/or writing into its design. These upcycled gift tags feature delicate dove cutouts atop of a circle cut from a dictionary page.

Vendor: Kelso Doesn’t Dance

Woven Vintage Tablecloth

This woven cotton tablecloth reminds me of something I might find in a bin at Urban Outfitters, question whether or not it was adorable, purchase because it was on sale and then use until it literally became worn with holes.

Vendor: I Wonder Vintage

Sea Glass Necklace

As a kid, I always loved to skim the beach in search of sea glass, which I would later wrap in wire and fashion into jewelry. I love this more grown-up version. The copper chain makes this necklace a little bit tough while the delicate cut out heart design makes it sweet, too.

Vendor: Sea Find Designs

Lavender Ring Pillow

A linen ring pillow filled with lavender is a simple, yet pretty (and calming) touch for any wedding ceremony. Each ring pillow is custom made so that you can select colors that will tie in with your wedding palette.

Vintage Tablescape

For those of you who have been keeping up with your reading, you know that I have been on a bit of a “mason jar” kick. I love the idea of creating really chic tablescapes using simple containers made of either recycled or reused glass, such as mason jars, wine bottles and vintage milk bottles. I suppose I’ve always been a sucker for simple glamour. I use reclaimed mason jars around my house to store everything from pencils to loose change to flowers to wooden spoons. In addition to being beautiful in all their nostalgic simplicity, they can often be picked up by the boxful at garage sales, estate sales and thrift shops for a few dollars a piece. So for any non-believers, I present to you these lovely images, compliments of Ruffled, that incorporate my favorite vase (as well as some pretty vintage china, too).

Beautiful Reusable Flowers

If the thought of reusable flowers sends you into a panic, you’ll love these beautiful floral creations made by one of my favorite new companies, Emerson Made. The company creates adorably quirky hand dyed and hand stitched fabric flowers that can be worn as accessories or used as decor (and reused over and over again). Here, the bright colors of the flowers pop against a simple sheet of Kraft paper that is used as a table runner and add a touch of femininity to a simple earth-toned setting.

Vintage Jewelry Bouquets

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I am (to the jealousy of many girlfriends) the daughter of a florist. As such, I am often unimpressed by many floral arrangements and centerpieces since I have been surrounded by them for, literally, my entire life. Having said that, I am always on the lookout for creative floral options.

Any jewelry lover or trend setter will be inspired by these bouquets, which are crafted entirely from vintage jewelry and brooches. Reusing and recycling aside, these bouquets are completely glamorous – from the shimmering crystals to the striking jewel-toned petals – and will serve as the perfect pop of color set against the backdrop of any white gown.

Seasonal Inspiration

Lately, I’ve been finding constant inspiration just about everywhere and in everything. So today, instead of focusing on just one fun new find, I thought I’d put together a small collection of ideas, inspired by the changing seasons, which have been keeping my creative juices in full turn recently.

The first is this playful, DIY apple swag. I can already imagine these brightly colored swags draped on the backside of chairs at an autumn potluck or a small barn wedding.

The next two ideas carry me right back to the winters of my childhood. During late autumn and early fall, I always enjoyed collecting stray pinecones in the woods adjacent to my house. Often, the pinecones would end up adorned with glue drops, glitter and a collection of plastic jewels. I like to think of the following ideas as a more “grown-up” version of my childhood DIY projects.

It’s pretty well known by those in my intimate circle that, on nearly any warm spring day, you can find me clipping fresh flowers in my backyard. Spring blooms come in such beautiful colors and shapes that they very rarely need anything else to dress them up. When loosely placed in reused mason jars, such as in the photos below, fresh spring clippings are the perfect centerpieces for any table, no matter the affair.

For me, summer brings to mind two words: outdoors and casual. Each idea below embraces simple summer elegance without the need to sacrifice individual style.

Living Favors

Photo Credit: Beau Coup & Dog and Bird Get Married

When selecting your wedding favors, look no further than your local greenhouse or garden center. Small potted plants make charming favors that guests can take home and enjoy for weeks (or in the case of the young evergreens above, years) after your ceremony. Often, floral retailers offer good prices when these small items are purchased in bulk. Enjoy an evening with your bridesmaids to decorate each plant with tasteful fabrics and ribbons that will blend well with the rest of your wedding décor. Or, purchase small vases or ceramic pots to set each plant into. Then, not only will guests enjoy the blooms or foliage following your wedding, but also a delicate container that can be reused throughout the year.

DIY: Recycled Mini-Lanterns

Here is a fun, super easy way to turn trash into adorable party décor. Instead of tossing aluminum cans into the recycling bin, give them new life as tea light holders. Simply remove the paper label and clean the can with warm, soapy water. Then, create a simplistic design on the can by punching holes through the metal. The cans can be organized on a patio, a stairwell or on tabletops. If you prefer, string a simple ribbon through the holes punched in the can and then hang your mini-recycled “lantern” from a high-standing centerpiece for a playful design touch.
